Is Your Dryer Vent Safe?
Dryer fires are one of the leading causes of household fires in the United States each year. Dryer vents should be cleaned annually by a professional to insure that the vent and exhaust are operating efficiently and effectively.
Cleaning the lint trap between loads is not enough because, over time, lint accumulates in the dryer vent (the exhaust from the dryer to the outside), or dryer exhaust. This build up of lint in the dryer vent can cause the dryer to overheat and the lint poses a fire danger.
KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS:
- Clothes dryer is hot to the touch on the outside of the unit
- Clothes take a long time to dry
- Clothes are hotter than usual at the end of the cycle
- Flapper on vent hood doesn’t open when dryer is on
- The dryer is shutting off before the cycle is completed (a safety control indicating that the dryer has exceeded a safe temperature)

BEWARE OF SCAMS!! A dryer vent cleaning should include the removal of your dryer venting from the rear of your dryer. Your dryer should be cleaned and inspected, the vent should then be cleaned from one end to the other – no Excuses. Using a shop vacuum IS NOT the proper way to clean a dryer vent and it will not do a proper job, nor will it insure that your dryer vent is cleaned properly.
